Scientists have made a new map of Antarctica , a very detailed analysis of the surface.
British Antarctic Survey in conjunction with NASA has completed work on creating new maps of the surface of Antarctica. Thanks to it you can learn how to look mainland ice layer without fettering its more than 30 million years.
The project , called BedMap2, was to calculate the amount of ice accumulated on Antarctica , and possible options for its melting . Scientists want to understand how the oceans could rise under various scenarios of global warming and the release of huge masses of water from the glaciers on other continents and ice of Antarctica.
To understand how much ice on the mainland , it was necessary to get an accurate map of the terrain , which in turn gave an idea how thick the ice cover certain areas . As a result, Antarctica scanned all possible modern means of remote sensing satellites , aerial photography and ground expeditions. To create a new map was , in particular, uses information obtained by airplanes in the program NASA Operation IceBridge.
One of the most striking discoveries was finding the deepest point of all continents – a valley beneath the glacier Byrd is on 2780 meters below sea level . Also, scientists obtained the first detailed pictures of mountains Gamburtseva that are under 1.6 -kilometer layer of ice.
NASA, working in conjunction with the British Antarctic Survey , has announced that all the data collected will be made available to researchers .
